I hope everyone had a great weekend. I am sure most of your students have told you that I plan on changing Class Dojo for the rest of the year. I just wanted to take a moment to explain the new points system and why I plan on changing the goals. I have noticed AR percentages have been very low this 9-weeks. I know AR has been rough this 9-weeks due to snow days and the AR application not working correctly. I also have the feeling that Class Dojo has encouraged many students to rush through their books in order to get more Class Dojo points. To help reduce the rushing AR quizzes, I am going to only allow one point per day for AR. Students can get one Class Dojo point for passing two books a day. This is going back to their normal AR homework requirement. The rest of the Class Dojo points can be attained from participation each day (10 points), homework completion each week (3 points), and going above and beyond in the classroom (any amount of points). The students and I have spoken about what earns these points. If you have any questions, please let me know. I plan on creating a table for the students with Class Dojo point opportunities. Thank you. -Mr. McDannald | Spring pictures will be March 11, 2016. Please wear bright colors! |

We have had an interesting two weeks recently. We will do our best to stay on top of things. The Valentine’s Day party will be the first day back at 2:00 pm. I am sorry for any inconvenience this might cause to parents looking to attend. We will continue most of our skills from last week. I will not be taking a grade on last week’s story. I will let them read the story again and take the AR quiz instead. As we continue measurement, please have students continue to work on money, time, and addition facts. We spiral through those skills weekly, but it never hurts to have more practice at home. On future snow day, I have given students access to Think Central and Front Row. The students, if you have access to the internet, can practice at home skills of their choosing. I will reward those students with Class Dojo points. If you need an updated school schedule, please let me know. Thank you and have a great week. -Mr. McDannald | Please check the updated schedule for Johnson City Schools due to recent snow days. |
Math EQs: How do we measure length using inches and feet? How do we estimate the length of objects in inches? How do we compare objects in inches?
Reading EQs: How do I describe characters responding to events? How do I determine the meanings of our vocabulary words? How do I write showing my opinion? How do I correctly use dictionary and glossary?
We had a great week. The math tests turned out really well. I was very pleased with the results. Many students are showing their understanding of time and money. Mid-terms went out last week. If you have any questions about the mid-terms, please call or write me a note. Friday is our Valentine’s Day party. The party is at the very end of the day. It starts at 2:00 pm. We will have an afternoon snack and exchange Valentines cards. Students DO NOT have to bring cards, I will set aside time during indoor recess to make cards. We sent home notes with all the student’s first names for those students who do want to hand out cards. This week we will continue on measuring lengths of objects in customary units. Reading is all review skills this week. We will also be reviewing dictionary and glossary skills. I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the Super Bowl. Please let me know if you have any questions about the party on Friday, Mid-terms, or any other concerns. Thank you. -Mr. McDannald | We have a PTA meeting on February 9. 2016 at 6:30 PM. The first grade will be performing. |
